Just ask for the help
Two halves to this one, and most people are only good at one of them.
Half one: when somebody asks, you help
A friend calls and needs a hand moving. Needs a ride. Needs somebody to sit in a waiting room with them and not say anything useful.
You go.
You do not audit whether they have earned it. You do not check whether it is convenient, because it will not be, it never is. You do not wait to see if somebody else volunteers first.
You go!!
Most people are actually pretty good at this half. Ask around. Almost everybody you know would show up with a truck if you needed a truck.
Half two: and this is where we all fall apart
You ask.
Out loud. To an actual person. Before it becomes a crisis.
And when somebody offers, you say YES, instead of “oh no, we’re fine, don’t worry about it,” which is the single most common lie in the English language.
Why is this so hard
We have thought about this a lot, and here is where we landed.
Somewhere along the way most of us picked up the idea that needing things makes you a burden. That the goal is to be the one who gives and never the one who takes. That asking is a kind of failing.
It is backwards.
Think about the last time somebody you love let you help them with something that actually mattered. Not a favor. Something real.
Did you resent it??
Or was it the most useful you had felt all week.
That is what you are taking away from people when you tell them you are fine. You are not sparing them anything. You are just deciding on their behalf that they would rather not.
The one that is not about moving a couch
There is a version of this that is heavier, and we are not going to dance around it.
Sometimes the help you need is not a truck. Sometimes it is telling somebody that you are not okay, in a way that is hard to say out loud, to a person you are scared of worrying.
Say it anyway.
Say it clumsily. Say it at a bad time. Say it to the wrong person and then say it again to a better one. There is no elegant way to do this and it does not need to be elegant.
If you are in it right now: call or text 988. That is the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It is free, it is confidential, and it is there at three in the morning when nothing else is. If texting is easier, send HOME to 741741 for the Crisis Text Line.
Neither of those is a last resort. You are allowed to use them on an ordinary Tuesday, for a thing you are not even sure counts.
And if you are on the other side of it
If somebody tells you they are struggling, you do not have to fix it. You are not qualified and they are not asking you to be.
Just do not flinch, and do not disappear.
“I’m glad you told me” is a complete sentence. So is “I don’t know what to say, but I’m not going anywhere.”
Show up. Stay. That is the entire job. 🖤
